Subaru OBD2 Diagnostic Portal
Subaru's horizontal Boxer engine layout presents unique diagnostic conditions: dual cylinder heads place catalytic converters directly underneath the engine, and oil consumption on early FB25 engines can coat O2 sensors and catalytic converters prematurely.

Subaru Factory Service Advisories & Field Notes
Because the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter sit horizontally directly beneath the engine block, exhaust flange gaskets between the manifold and heads frequently leak, introducing ambient air into the front A/F sensor and falsely setting P0420.
Subaru installed tiny mesh filter screens inside the oil feed banjo bolts supplying the VVT AVCS solenoids and turbocharger. These screens clog with oil carbon, starving the cam phasers and turbo bearings. Removing the screens is a standard factory-recommended service.
